Do you remember Christmas Day 1989? The people of Romania do. This was, perhaps, the most graphic illustration of the collapse of communism and the failure of socialism.
On Christmas Day, the revolution reached its climax as the dictator Nicolai Ceausescu , and his wife Elena, were executed, live on TV.
In the years that have followed, Romania, like many former Communist Bloc states, has progressed, and at times struggled, to become a free and democratic state.
Now, more than 30 years later, eastern Europe in particular is seeing that freedom must be continually protected and, at times fought for.
We are honoured that Viorel Raducanescu has agreed as guest speaker at our next event for Conservative Party members.
As well as talking about his country's progress since 1989, we look forward to learning more from Mr Raducanescu of the impact of the Russian invasion of Ukraine on the region and lessons for other former communist states.
