A Labour Councillor who was elected on a promise to protect Wirral's Green Belt has quit the Party.
Gail Jenkinson, elected in Greasby, Frankby and Irby in May, has resigned from Labour, following the Party's decision to water down support for protecting Green Belt and, instead, offer up large parts of the countryside to developers.
Speaking to the Wirral Globe, Cllr. Jenkinson said:
I love the place where I grew up and still live, and I speak to residents every day.
I cannot do this honestly as Labour changes its policies, particularly now it is saying it will relax controls on building on the greenbelt.
Speaking just days after the last council elections, Sir Keir Starmer said Labour would give English councils more powers to build on green belt land to boost housing.
The Labour leader told the BBC he was prepared to take "tough decisions" and "back the builders, not the blockers".
Developers wanting to build more than 1,000 houses on Green Belt between Saughall Massie and Greasby could be among the first to get the go ahead.
