Protecting our Green Belt and better housing

We will build 1.6 million homes over the next Parliament, delivering record numbers of family homes on brownfield sites in city and town centres to protect our precious countryside and build the homes where they are needed.

Protect Wirral's Green Belt

We will retain our cast-iron commitment to protect the Green Belt from uncontrolled development. Labour, under Keir Starmer, has pledged to weaken protection for our Green Belt.

In Wirral, developers have already submitted counter-proposals to the Green Belt - for example, 1,000 houses could be built around Saughall Massie.

Instead, we will deliver a record number of homes each year on brownfield land in urban areas. We will do this by providing a fast track route through the planning system for new homes on previously developed land in the 20 largest cities.

We will make sure councils use the new Infrastructure Levy to deliver the GP surgeries, roads and other local infrastructure needed to support homes. We will not allow these funds to be spent on community projects that bear no relation to support for new homes.

Better housing

Wirral has so far received around £100m for urban regeneration, including Wirral Waters between Wallasey and Birkenhead and, finally, £10m to kick start work in Liscard.

We will also renew the Affordable Homes Programme that will deliver homes of all tenures and focus on regenerating and improving housing estates.

We will also launch a new and improved Help to Buy scheme to provide first-time buyers with an equity loan of up to 20% towards the cost of a new build home. First-time buyers will be able to get onto the housing ladder with a 5% deposit on interest terms they can afford.

We will always prioritise giving those who work hard and contribute to our country a leg up in the housing market. We will legislate for new ‘Local Connection’ and ‘UK Connection’ tests for social housing in England, to ensure this valuable but limited resource is allocated fairly.

And we will implement a ‘three strikes and you’re out’ expectation of social housing landlords for anti-social behaviour. They will be expected to evict tenants whose behaviour is disruptive to neighbours and the local community.

We will pass a Renters Reform Bill that will deliver fairness in the rental market for landlords and renters alike. We will deliver the court reforms necessary to fully abolish Section 21 and strengthen other grounds for landlords to evict private tenants guilty of anti-social behaviour.

We will continue with our plans to end rough sleeping and prevent people from ending up on the streets in the first place, after making significant progress over the last few years. We will deliver our commitments under the Local Authority Housing Fund and review the quality of temporary accommodation.

Tell Robbie...

What do you think of the policies we've announced:

Introducing Triple Lock Plus to ensure nobody pays income tax on their State Pension
Recruiting an extra 8,000 police officers, each for a dedicated local area
Raising the threshold at which a first-time buyer pays Stamp Duty from £300,000 to £425,000, meaning the majority of first-time buyers do not pay Stamp Duty.
Requiring councils to hold a local 'referendum' on the introduction of 20mph zones
Introducing a new model of National Service, requiring 18 year olds to take part in a 12 month military placement or volunteering role in the local community
Building 50 new Community Diagnostic Centres to provide more tests and checks for conditions like cancer
Delivering 100,000 more apprenticeships and making it easier for employers to take on apprentices
