Following remarks made by Labour's Chair of the Adult Social Care and Health Committee, Cllr. Janette Williamson, to 'euthanise' opponents, Councillor Jeff Green, Leader of Wirral's Conservatives, said:
"Myself and my Group were shocked and disgusted by the comments made concerning killing members of the Conservative Party last night.
"I had been given to understand that, considering the serious financial issues the Council faces having already gone cap in hand to the Government seeking a bailout of over £12 million and the need to focus on the issues facing Wirral’s residents, particularly the most vulnerable, who are facing high rates of inflation, that the Labour Party would end its historic tribalism and join with us in focussing on these serious issues collectively.
"Unfortunately, the Labour Party’s behaviour last night clearly demonstrated they are incapable of acting in a non-tribal way. I am particularly disappointed that nobody in the leadership of the Labour Group saw fit to rebuke Cllr. Williamson for her comments regarding euthanising people with different political views than her own."
It is not known if Cllr. Williamson signed the Civility Pledge organised by the Jo Cox Foundation prior to the last elections.
Sadly, her comments, made in public at the meeting of Council held in Birkenhead Town Hall on 10 July, are not the first time the Liscard Labour Councillor has found herself in difficulty due to her views. We wait to see if she will, once again, be forced to apologise.
