Almost 3,000 people living near to Saughall Massie's Green Belt have started to receive letters from the local Councillors, following the news that the Government was more than doubling Wirral's housing target.
There are fears that even with the regeneration the run down parts of the Borough - in Birkenhead and around the docks - there will not be anywhere near enough land to accommodate 35,000 houses and flats - unless Green Belt land is also released for development.
The letter from Councillors Colin Baldwin, Gary Bennett and Vida Wilson followed the shock vote at the Town Hall earlier in August when Labour Councillors voted against a Conservative call to reject the Government's target.
Councillor Jeff Green, Leader of Wirral's Conservative Councillors, said: "Colin, Gary and Vida are to be thanked for this work. Too often, we hear from residents that they didn't know about a particular issue.
"The threat to our Green Belt is too important to be left to the 'grapevine' - I was keen to lend a hand and delighted the team in Moreton and Saughall Massie were able to make sure that residents know exactly what is happening and, more important, what happens next."
Conservative Councillors are opposing the new target, highlighting the impact on the local community:
- Extra pressure on the flood plain and the Arrowe Brook and Birket
- Extra pressure on roads and public transport
- Extra pressure on local services including schools and GP surgeries
- Loss of local wildlife sites and biodiversity
Councillor Colin Baldwin added: "Thank you to all the volunteers for their help this morning. We are determined to do all we can to prevent 1,000 houses being built on Saughall Massie's Green Belt but we can't do that without the support of the community.
"As well as keeping residents informed, we've also highlighted ways in which people can get involved and give their views."
